Philodendron care

The Philodendron species originally come from the rainforest of South America. The family of the Philodendron, also often called tree friend, is the Araceae family. There are many different Philodendron species such as the Philodendron Monstera (French window leaf), Philodendron Xanadu and Philodendron Scandens.

Watering Philodendron

The base of a Philodendron must always remain moist. However, the plant does not use much water. A philodendron is sensitive to too much water. Therefore, do not pour too large quantities at once. You can water the houseplant again, once the soil starts to dry out, don't let it dry out too much.

The amount of water depends on various factors, such as the location and size of the houseplant. Therefore, start with smaller amounts of water. If the ground is still moist after four days, water less.

Stick a finger into the soil to check if it feels moist. With a new houseplant, it is prudent to do this regularly. After watering it a few times, you will learn how much water your philodendron needs.

Water system

If you plant the plant in vulcastrate and provide it with a water level indicator, the water requirements will change. Water once a week (in summer) until the water level indicator moves. The smaller the rash the better. The water level indicator shows when there is too much water in the pot. In winter it is best to water once every two weeks.

Spraying

The more the better. Specimens that grow upwards with their aerial roots in particular are often sprayed. It is advisable to spray at least once a week.

Philodendron Light and Warmth

Philodendron species thrive in low light. Avoid direct sunlight, especially midday sun.

Place the houseplant 3 to 4 meters from a window in the north, or 4 meters in the east/west, or 5-6 meters in the south. These distances ensure that the houseplant receives a maximum of three hours of direct sunlight.

Repotting Philodendron

Repot the philodendron either immediately after purchase or in spring (preferred). Use universal potting soil or anthurium soil for this. Use a pot that is at least 20 percent larger in diameter than the previous one. Use a cover for tall pots. This prevents water from rotting at the bottom of the pot because the water here is out of reach of the roots. Older specimens do not need to be repotted. The top layer can also be replaced with fresh soil. Of course, repotting it into a nice planter looks better.

 

Fertilizing Philodendron

Fertilize once a week for green plants in the growing season. Never give too much, even if the houseplant has not been fertilized for a while. Fertilizing is not necessary during the rest period in autumn and winter. Read the instructions for use for the correct dosage.
